Addis Ababa University (AAU) and Global Studies University (GSU) have signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) to foster collaboration in curriculum development, research, and exchange programs for both students and staff.
The MoA was signed on November 5, 2024, at the AAU main campus in Addis Ababa by Dr. Samuel Kifle, President of AAU, and Distinguished Professor Salah M. Hassan, Chancellor of GSU and Dean of the Africa Institute at GSU, Sharjah, UAE.
The major issues discussed during the meeting centered around the possibility of collaboration between the two institutions, particularly on strengthening critical scholarship from the Global South, the UAE, Ethiopia, and other regions across the African continent.
This partnership will also include curriculum development in social studies and humanities, with a focus on subjects like International Relations of Africa, Afro-Arab relations, museum studies, and more. The institutions will work together on staff and student exchange programs, organizing international conferences, and generating funds for collaborative research projects.
The collaboration offers AAU students new opportunities to participate in exchange programs focused on global and African studies, and provides a platform for faculty members to collaborate on research within the social sciences and humanities.
The Africa Institute, GSU will play a key role in this collaboration, with a focus on teaching, research, and the documentation of African histories, cultures, and peoples. This partnership aims to strengthen academic ties, contribute to the advancement of scholarship, and further enhance the understanding of African and global issues.
The signing ceremony was attended by key figures from both institutions. From AAU, participants included Dr. Samuel Kifle, President of AAU; Dr. Samson Mekonnen, AAU Vice President for Strategic Communication and Internationalization; Dr. Takele Merid, Director of the Institute of Ethiopian Studies, AAU; and Dr. Yonas Ashine, Head of the Department of Political Science and International Relations, AAU.
