The Africa Institute (Global Studies University) recently participated in the SAWA Conference 2024, held from November 4-5 at the Sharjah Archaeology Museum, marking ten years of the SAWA program’s pioneering cross-cultural museum learning. Associate Dean Binyam Sisay Mendisu represented The Africa Institute, reinforcing its commitment to cultural exchange in museum studies.

Organized by the Sharjah Museums Authority (SMA) with support from partners including Crescent Group and the German Consulate in Dubai, the conference convened cultural leaders and museum professionals to explore themes of accessibility, international cooperation, and curatorial innovation. 

In his address, H.E. Sheikh Fahim Bin Sultan Bin Khalid Al Qasimi, Executive Chairman of the Department of Government Relations, emphasized the importance of collaborative museum spaces in bridging cultural divides. Keynote speaker H.E. Sybille Pfaff, Consul General of Germany in Dubai, praised SAWA’s contributions to cross-cultural knowledge and professional growth in museum studies.

As the SAWA project enters its next phase, The Africa Institute is poised to join forces with the program, contributing expertise in museum and critical heritage studies and cross-cultural research to develop inclusive, dynamic learning environments in museum practices.
