The Story of Meroë

Meroë Bookshop derives its name from the ancient Kingdom of Meroë, which once straddled the Nile in what is now known as Nubi. The kingdom extended from Aswan in Egypt to Khartoum in Sudan, and its principal language, Meroitic, was spoken and written from the third century BC before fading into extinction in the fourth century AD. The alphasyllabic Meroitic script continues to challenge scholars, with the exception of basic transcribing of proper nouns from Egyptian script, as there is no written record to decipher the language. By naming the bookshop after this ancient civilization, The Africa Institute seeks to pay homage to the rich cultural heritage of Africa and inspire a deeper appreciation of African studies and the African diaspora.
