GSU offers the following postgraduate programs:
- MA in Global African Studies, with three specializations:
• Track 1: Museum and Critical Heritage Studies
• Track 2: Diplomacy and Africa’s International Relations
• Track 3: Afro-Arab Relations - Ph.D. in Global Studies, with two interdisciplinary tracks:
• Track 1: Cultural, Visual, and Literary Studies
• Track 2: Historical, Political, and Social Studies

Yes, both the MA (2-year) and Ph.D. (5-year) programs are full-time, on-campus programs.
- MA students are expected to maintain full-time status. Those on scholarships or research assistantships may work up to eight (8) hours per week, only during the second academic year.

Therefore, applicants are required to demonstrate English language proficiency by submitting either an Academic IELTS score of at least 6.5 (paper-based or computer-based formats only, home-based/online tests are not accepted) or a TOEFL iBT score of at least 91.

All applicants are required to submit attested transcripts and degree certificates as part of the admission process. If your original documents are still in process, please get in touch with the Admissions Office at admissions@gsu.ac.ae for guidance on your specific situation.
If the certificates and transcripts are not issued in English, students are required to submit a legally translated and attested copy in English. The attestation must be completed by the legal translation provider, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the UAE Embassy in the country where the certificate was issued.
Yes, if your degrees were earned outside the UAE. You must obtain a certificate of equivalency from the UAE Ministry of Education’s Higher Education Affairs Division. (How to Apply – theafricainstitute)
The application fee is AED 365 (non-refundable). It can be paid online via credit/debit card.
You can typically track the progress of your application through the online portal. Additionally, the admissions team will provide updates via email from time to time.

Admission decisions are typically issued within 60 days after the application deadline. Successful applicants will receive an official offer letter by email.
Deferral requests must be submitted in writing within seven days of receiving your official admission offer and must include a valid reason. Please note that approval is not guaranteed and is subject to review by the Admissions Committee. Even if a deferral is approved, admission for the next intake is not assured and will depend on various factors, including the strength of the applicant pool and available financial and budgetary resources.
Once you are admitted, you will receive an official admission offer letter by email. The letter will outline the required next steps, including confirmation of acceptance, submission of any pending documents, and guidance on visa, registration, and orientation procedures.
Yes, international students require a valid UAE student visa to study at GSU.
Yes, GSU offers visa sponsorship for admitted international students. Detailed information and requirements will be provided after admission.
Once admitted, follow the university’s visa application instructions. Submit a valid passport for more than a year, the offer letter, passport-sized photos, and health clearance as required by immigration authorities.
GSU offers comprehensive full scholarships for graduate students, including:
- Tuition coverage
- Monthly stipend
- UAE visa sponsorship and health insurance
- Air tickets (for international students)
- Accommodation support
- To be eligible to apply and maintain the scholarship, student must have:
- A minimum CGPA of 3.5/4.0 on your previous degree
- Full-time enrolment at GSU (6–12 credit hours per semester)
- Must maintain a GPA ≥ 3.5 and good academic standing to keep scholarship status
- MA and PhD students are welcome to bring their families. Family sponsorship may be possible, subject to approval by the UAE Immigration Authorities, but it cannot be guaranteed by the Institute. The university does not cover any related expenses; all costs for family members must be borne by the student.
Orientation Week is an introductory program designed to help newly admitted students familiarize themselves with GSU, its resources, and campus life. Attendance is highly encouraged for all new students.
GSU offers a range of support services to help students succeed, including academic advising, visa processing assistance, housing support, health insurance (provided through scholarships), and access to student services such as the International Office, library, and other campus resources.
The Code of Conduct, as outlined in the Student Handbook, sets forth the university’s rules and regulations governing student behavior. It defines the standards GSU students are expected to uphold and details the procedures and potential sanctions applied when behavior does not align with the university’s core values.
