Aliyu Mustapha Lawal, Lecturer of Hausa at The Africa Institute, Global Studies University, has been awarded a Ph.D. in Islamic and Arabic Studies, specializing in Arabic Literature and Criticism, by Al-Azhar University in Cairo. 

Lawal successfully defended his doctoral dissertation on December 20, 2025 at the Faculty of Arabic and Islamic Studies, Al-Azhar University. Titled “The Poetry of Sheikh Weld Bel‘Amsh: Manifestations of Vision and Devices of Artistic Formation,” the dissertation examines the thematic visions and artistic structures in the work of Mauritanian poet Sheikh Weld Bel‘Amsh, with attention to religious, national, pan-Arab, and humanitarian concerns, as well as poetic form, stylistic structure, language, and rhythm. 

The dissertation was supervised by Mokhtar Muhammad Juma’a, Professor of Arabic Literature and Criticism at the Faculty of Arabic and Islamic Studies and former Minister of Islamic Affairs in Egypt, as Primary Supervisor, and by Assistant Professor (Emeritus) Mustapha Abdurrahman Ibrahim Abdurrahman Al-Khadde, of Literature and Criticism at the Faculty, as Co-Supervisor. It was examined by Professor (Emeritus) Zahran Muhammad Gabr, of Literature and Criticism at the Faculty and Chair of the Promotion Committee for Professors and Assistant Professors at Al-Azhar University, as Internal Examiner, and by Alaa Ganeb, Professor of Arabic Literature and Criticism, Dean of the Faculty of Arabic Language at Al-Azhar University, and Prince of Poets, as External Examiner.

Lawal was awarded the degree with First-Class Honors.
