Zaynab El Bernoussi, Interim Chair of the Department of Humanities and Associate Professor of Political Science at The Africa Institute, delivered the keynote address at the 2024 Sociology of Development Conference held in Washington, DC.
Her speech, titled “More Problem-Setting for Poverty Solving,” is now featured in the latest issue of Sociological Insights for Development Policy, a publication of the American Sociological Association. The special issue includes contributions from leading scholars, including experts from Johns Hopkins University, Brown University, and the World Bank, highlighting sociology’s vital role in shaping global development policy.
The 2024 conference focused on the theme “Solving Global Poverty,” bringing together an international community of researchers, policymakers, and practitioners to explore innovative sociological approaches to addressing complex development challenges. Professor El Bernoussi’s keynote reflects critically on how the framing of poverty shapes the solutions proposed, emphasizing the importance of problem-setting in the development discourse.
The special issue of Sociological Insights for Development Policy aims to strengthen the link between sociological research and development practice worldwide. Alongside Professor El Bernoussi, the volume features plenary talks by prominent scholars such as Monica Prasad (Johns Hopkins University), Patrick Heller (Brown University), Rina Agarwala (Johns Hopkins University), Michael Woolcock (The World Bank and Harvard Kennedy School) and Jennifer Keahey (Arizona State University).
