The 2025 cohort of the MA in Global African Studies program visited the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization on November 19, 2025, as part of their Theory and Methods course.
Organized by Amy Niang, Associate Professor of Political Science at The Africa Institute (GSU), the visit offered students an opportunity to engage directly with manuscripts, scientific instruments, and historical artefacts, approaching them as diverse forms of “texts” that convey layered meanings. Through this encounter with material culture, students strengthened their understanding of cultural and historical developments across Islamic intellectual traditions.
Established in 1996, the museum’s collection of Islamic arts and material culture includes more than five thousand pieces gathered from across the Islamic world, displayed chronologically across six distinct galleries.
