The Africa Institute has awarded its third cohort of senior fellows named in honor of the esteemed late professor of African studies Ali A. Mazrui as well as two postdoctoral fellowships named for scholar, curator and art critic Okwui Enwezor and for world-renowned Moroccan scholar Fatema Mernissi.
Initiating their respective fellowships in September 2022, the awardees are as follows:
Ali A. Mazrui Senior Fellow in Global African Studies: Abdourahmane Idrissa, Senior Researcher at Leiden University’s African Studies Centre
Okwui Enwezor Postdoctoral Fellow in Visual Culture, Performance Studies and Critical Humanities: Mohamed Faroug A. Ali is an Assistant Professor of Archaeology at the International University of Africa, Sudan
Fatema Mernissi Postdoctoral Fellow in Social and Cultural Studies: Semeneh Ayalew Asfaw, Lecturer and Researcher in Ethiopian Studies at the Addis Ababa University
The Africa Institute Research Fellowships Program grows strength to strength since its launch in 2021 enabling a stimulating platform and opportunity for both junior and senior scholars of African and African diaspora studies to focus on a research project and participate in ongoing scholarly and intellectual activities. The program also grants fellows the benefit to interact with scholars and academics in their area of research with the aim to facilitate and encourage interdisciplinary collaboration, knowledge exchange and enrich scholarly experiences and future projects.
In September 2022, The Africa Institute officially added another senior fellowship dedicated to literary icon Toni Morrison titled, The Toni Morrison Senior Fellowship in African Diaspora Literature and Cultural Studies.
For the next intake of fellows in fall 2023, The Africa Institute will launch an open call on September 22, 2022.
