The Africa Institute is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Binyam Sisay Mendisu as its Associate Director. Taking on his new role this April 2023, Professor Mendisu will be responsible for overseeing administrative tasks, faculty affairs, and academic affairs.

Professor Mendisu brings a wealth of expertise and professional experience to the position, having previously served as the Dean of Humanities and Coordinator of the Graduate Program in the Department of Linguistic and Philology at Addis Ababa University as well as working closely with UNESCO on the interface of science and policy, and science leadership development. Professor Mendisu’s work largely interfaces between science, society, policy and capacity development. Recently, he was elected as a fellow of the International Science Council (ISC).

Since joining The Africa Institute as an Associate Professor of the African Languages and Linguistics in 2021, he has made significant contributions to the organization’s success, including establishing the African Languages and Translation Program and collaborating with colleagues to develop textbooks for teaching African languages. Professor Mendisu has also been instrumental in creating linkages and collaborations with peer institutions, locally and internationally.

Professor Salah M. Hassan, The Africa Institute’s Director said, “As we enter a new phase of development at The Africa Institute, we are thrilled to have Professor Binyam Sisay Mendisu join us as Associate Director. His experience and skills will be invaluable to our team and the institute’s continued growth and development.”

Upon his appointment as the Associate Director of The Africa Institute, Professor Binyam Sisay Mendisu said, “I am humbled to take on this new role and work alongside and serve such a talented and dedicated team. I look forward to contributing to the Institute’s mission and continuing to promote interdisciplinary scholarship, the place of African languages and cultures to the study and understanding of Global Africa through our academic programs and collaborations with other institutions.”
