Maha Bashri, Associate Professor of Media and Communication at The Africa Institute, has published a chapter in the newly released volume Feminist Digital Citizenship in Africa: Agency, Rights and Resistance.
Her chapter, titled “Contesting Boundaries: Gendered Citizenship and Digital Activism in Sudan,” investigates how Sudanese activists use digital platforms to challenge social and political norms related to gender and citizenship. The research highlights the ways online spaces can be leveraged for social change and the assertion of rights.
The volume, the latest in the Digital Africa series, is edited by Tanja Bosch, Professor of Media Studies and Production and Deputy Dean of Research and Postgraduate Affairs at the University of Cape Town, and Tony Roberts, Fellow at the Institute of Development Studies, University of Sussex. Published by Bloomsbury, the book is open access and can be read online here.
Bashri’s work contributes to ongoing discussions about digital activism and gendered citizenship in Africa, offering insights for scholars, activists, and policymakers alike.
