Restitution and Reparation: Africa and the Post-Colonial Condition Fellow, Fall 2026

Nancy Rushohora is a Tanzanian archaeologist and heritage scholar and a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Archaeology and Heritage Studies at the University of Dar es Salaam. She is also an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Exeter, UK, and Stellenbosch University, South Africa. Her research focuses on the archaeology of resistance, heritage and trauma, collective memory, and the politics of photography and memorialization, particularly in relation to colonial violence and its aftermath in Africa.

Rushohora leads Transgenerational Memories of the Majimaji War (1904–1908), a digital initiative exploring memory landscapes, war memorials, missionary archives, and the repatriation of Tanzanian ancestral remains held in Germany. The project seeks to amplify diverse narratives and develop a documentary film addressing colonial trauma and memory landscapes. She is also co-author of the forthcoming Handbook of Memory Studies in Sub-Saharan Africa, scheduled for publication in 2027.

As a Restitution and Reparation Fellow, Fall 2026, Rushohora examines epistemic restitution through the Majimaji War documentary film, considering film as a means of restoring and sharing knowledge beyond the restitution of cultural belongings and ancestral remains.

The Africa Institute, Global Studies University, in collaboration with the Open Society Foundations, offers the “Restitution and Reparation: Africa and the Post-Colonial Condition” fellowship. The program brings together scholars and practitioners working on restitution and repatriation of African art and cultural objects, fostering research, dialogue, and practical strategies for returning looted artifacts. The fellowship spans three cohorts, from Fall 2025 through Fall 2026, providing an interdisciplinary platform to explore the cultural, political, and ethical dimensions of restitution. Read more.
