Global Studies University (GSU), in partnership with the College of Communication, University of Sharjah, hosted a virtual professional development session on March 26, 2026, titled “Enhancing Online Learning: Creating a Comprehensive Experience.” The training convened faculty and academic staff to examine emerging approaches in graduate-level online and hybrid instruction, emphasizing engagement, assessment, and instructional design.
Prof. Salah M. Hassan, Chancellor of GSU and Dean of The Africa Institute, opened the session by welcoming participants and acknowledging the strong partnership with the University of Sharjah. The collaboration builds on the formal memorandum of understanding between the two institutions to advance faculty development and strengthen graduate education.
The session featured presentations and demonstrations by distinguished facilitators: Prof. Jairo Lugo-Ocando, Dean of the College of Communication at the University of Sharjah; Prof. Marisol Ramirez, UNESCO Chair for Open Education in Latin America; Mr. Ahmed Meshmeshy, Education Technologist; and Dr. Monica Marchesi, Assistant Professor at the University of Barcelona. Attendees explored practical strategies for using Canvas, audiovisual teaching tools, MOOCs, micro-credentials, and AI-enhanced methods to support collaborative, cross-institutional learning.
Organized by Academic Affairs and the Director of Graduate Studies, with Prof. Jairo Lugo-Ocando from the University of Sharjah helping to moderate and coordinate the session, the training encouraged active engagement, with faculty posing questions, exchanging ideas, and reflecting on best practices.
“This session allowed our faculty to explore innovative instructional approaches and deepen cross-institutional collaboration, enhancing the learning experience for our graduate students,” said Binyam Sisay Mendisu, Director of Graduate Studies and Associate Dean of The Africa Institute.
