The Africa Institute faculty Elizabeth Giorgis, Professor of Art History, Theory and Criticism, and Grieve Chelwa, Associate Professor of Political Economy participated in a virtual panel discussion on “Studying Africa between Universality and Particularity, Rethinking the confines of Area Studies,” hosted by The Centre of African Studies, University of Cape Town on Wednesday, April 10, 2024.

The seminar explored nuanced questions regarding the scope of African scholarship, particularly whether scholars should limit themselves to African-centric issues or adopt a broader perspective with an African viewpoint when decolonizing the study of Africa.

The conversation was also joined by Richard Sambaiga, Dept. of Sociology and Anthropology, University of Dar es Salaam and Natasha Shivji, Department of Historical Studies, University of Cape Town who also explored intricate dynamics of knowledge production within the African context. This seminar formed part of The Centre for African Studies’ larger seminar series, themed “Predicaments of Our Times,” which aims to facilitate critical discussions on contemporary African studies.

The Africa Institute’s faculty members’ participation contributes meaningfully to the ongoing decolonization discourse in African scholarship, advancing inclusivity and broader perspectives in academic dialogue.
