The Africa Institute, Global Studies University, congratulates Professor Ousseina D. Alidou, Distinguished Professor of Humane Letters at Rutgers University–New Brunswick and Advisory Board Member of The Africa Institute, on receiving the 2025 Aidoo-Snyder Book Prize from the African Studies Association for her book Protest Arts, Gender, and Social Change: Fiction, Popular Songs, and the Media in Hausa Society across Borders (University of Michigan Press, 2024).

The Prize Committee highlighted Protest Arts for its innovative analysis of gender and popular culture in the Sahelian region, noting its “reimagining of how creative works engage with advocacy, amplify marginalized voices, and address issues such as gender-based violence, child marriage, and health inequities.” The committee also praised the book’s exploration of feminist perspectives, intraregional dialogue, and the role of art in challenging dominant narratives.

Professor Alidou will share insights from her research in an upcoming lecture titled “Gendered Scripts and Legacies in the Sahelian Space: Pre-Islamic, Islamic, and European Languages” as part of the Institute’s From Area Studies to Global Studies seminar series on October 23, 2025. The session will be moderated by Maha Bashri, Associate Professor of Media and Communication, The Africa Institute, Global Studies University, and is open to the public online via Zoom.

Prospective students interested in interdisciplinary global research are encouraged to explore the Fall 2026 Ph.D. in Global Studies, which provides opportunities to engage with leading scholars and participate in seminars such as this one.
