The Africa Institute is awarded a grant from the Social Science Research Council (SSRC) as part of the SSRC’s Transregional Collaboratory on the Indian Ocean. The grants are designed to support collaborative research projects that deepen understanding of the Indian Ocean region and are generously supported by funds from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
The funds from the grant will be used to support The Africa Institute’s ongoing country-focused season, “Thinking the Archipelago: Africa’s Indian Ocean Islands,” a multi-series scholarly and cultural conference program that was inaugurated on December 15, 2022, in Sharjah. The interdisciplinary season hosts four symposiums dedicated to highlighting the multitudinous forces shaping Africa’s Indian Ocean rim, including overlapping forms of circulation, mobility, cultural production, ecological change, and cosmopolitanism through the lens of Africa’s islands.
The grant will draw together scholars and institutions from across the globe and will be invested in cutting-edge social inquiry about the Indian Ocean region, bridge disciplinary and geographic boundaries, and propose fresh approaches to the study of the Indian Ocean and its subregions. It also supports the development of new models of international research partnerships, grounded in principles of ethical collaboration and equity in the production and dissemination of knowledge in and about Africa and the Global South.
The Social Science Research Council, a US-based nonpartisan nonprofit founded in 1923 by seven professional associations in the social and behavioral sciences, mobilizes policy-relevant social and behavioral science for the public good. The Council’s work has mobilized research, policy, and philanthropic communities in the search for workable solutions to pressing societal challenges for 100 years. Today, new tools and methods offer new opportunities for policy-relevant and socially useful social and behavioral science.
Established in 2018, The Africa Institute is an interdisciplinary academic research institute in Sharjah, UAE, is uniquely positioned to expand its understanding of African and African diaspora studies as a global enterprise. The Institute aims to be a model center of excellence that engages with, as well as shapes, new paradigms of thought in ways that will ensure Africa’s place at the forefront of the academy for years to come. The Institute’s programming includes named senior and postdoctoral fellowships, programs of international symposia and conferences, visual art exhibitions and artist commissions, film and performance series, and community classes and outreach events.
