Behnaz Mirzai, Ali A. Mazrui Senior Fellow at The Africa Institute, has been named a finalist in the World History category of the 50th annual PROSE Awards for her book The Life of an Enslaved African in the Ottoman Empire and Iran.

Mirzai’s book presents the first autobiography of an enslaved African in the region. It tells the story of Mahboob Qirvanian, born in Tunisia in 1894, enslaved, and later freed in Iran. The work offers a unique perspective on African diasporic communities in the Ottoman Empire and Iran.
Mirzai is a Full Professor of Middle Eastern History at Brock University, Canada. An interdisciplinary scholar whose research combines historical and anthropological approaches to explore African diasporic communities, their cultural practices, and historical experiences across the Middle East and the Indian Ocean.
