The Africa Institute, Global Studies University, announces the appointment of Dr.Philathia Bolton as Interim Chair of the Department of Humanities, effective Spring 2026. The interim appointment will transition to a full-time role as Chair of the Department of Humanities beginning July 1, 2026.

Bolton is an Associate Professor of African and African Diaspora Literature and Cultural Studies at The Africa Institute (GSU). Her research and teaching focus on African and African Diaspora literary traditions, cultural studies, and interdisciplinary approaches within the humanities.

As Interim Chair, Professor Bolton will provide academic leadership for the department, support faculty and students, and contribute to curriculum development and research planning during this period of institutional growth.

Professor Bolton joined The Africa Institute following her appointment as Associate Professor of English at the University of Akron, Ohio. Her academic experience includes university teaching, program leadership, and service across interdisciplinary humanities initiatives.

She has presented her research at national and international academic conferences, including the American Studies Association and the College Language Association. She was the inaugural recipient of the Toni Morrison Senior Fellowship at The Africa Institute (GSU) and participated in the 2019 Faberllull Writers’ Residency in Spain.

Professor Bolton holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in American Studies from Purdue University–West Lafayette and a B.A. in English from Spelman College.
