Alaa Laabar is a Master of Arts student in Global African Studies at The Africa Institute, Global Studies University, specializing in Museum and Critical Heritage Studies, from Tunisia. Her research explores how memory shapes and mobilizes linguistic landscapes and heritage discourses in the Arab and Muslim world. Coming from North Africa, Alaa developed a deep interest in how the loss of al-Andalus in medieval history continues to resonate across cultural forms such as songs, plays, and novels, both within Arab societies and in Western narratives. Her work examines how this enduring memory of loss and recovery is embedded in everyday language, aesthetic sensibilities, and social practices, with the goal of critically analyzing its broader implications for heritage and memory studies.
“The academic community fosters a culture of knowledge sharing and student-centered learning. From my first days in the program, I felt supported both intellectually and personally. The commitment of faculty and leadership to student success has created an environment in which I feel confident in my academic direction and future growth.”
