Global Studies University, The Africa Institute, Sharjah, will participate in the 68th Annual Meeting of the African Studies Association (ASA), themed “Crossing Boundaries and Recovering Intellectual Traditions,” taking place in Atlanta from November 20–22, 2025, to further the production and exchange of knowledge between Africa and the Arab world.
The African Studies Association (ASA) is the flagship organization based in the United States that is devoted to enhancing the exchange of information about Africa since its establishment in 1957. With almost 2,000 individual and institutional members worldwide, the ASA aims to cultivate a better understanding of the continent, taking a holistic approach to its areas of focus. This includes all facets of Africa’s political, economic, social, cultural, artistic, scientific, and environmental landscapes, to name a few.
The Annual Meeting provides an occasion for panels, plenary sessions, discussion groups, exhibits, and films. Participants from North America, Africa, Asia, and Europe gather for this meeting, which is held in cooperation with major colleges, universities, and museums in different regions of North America. With an average attendance of 2,000 scholars and professionals, the Annual Meeting is the largest gathering of Africanists in the world
Join us for “Ethiopia: Modern Nation—Ancient Roots”, part of the AfricaNow! series, on Friday, November 21, 2025, from 10:15 AM to 12:00 PM (ET) at Room L405/406 (Lobby Level), Atlanta Marriott Marquis. The session brings together Surafel Wondimu Abebe (The Africa Institute, Global Studies University); Dagmawi Woubshet (University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, USA); Fikru Gebrekidan (St. Thomas University, Fredericton, Canada); and Shimelis Bonsa (Stony Brook University, New York, USA) for a discussion examining Ethiopia’s unique place in African and global history, offering new insights into its cultural and political identity.
