This Arabic publication, Open Narrative Text: The Art of Narrative Storytelling, examines the literary craft of Sudanese novelist and short story writer Eltayeb Salih (1929–2009), widely regarded as one of the most prominent Arab writers of the 20th century. His acclaimed works, including Season of Migration to the North and Wedding of Zain, continue to influence generations of readers.
Mohamed Khalaph, author of Open Narrative Text: The Art of Narrative Storytelling, on his work:
“I will try in this publication to see how historical actuality is being presented in Tayeb Salih’s Season of Migration to the North; I will place particular emphasis on the oscillation between fact and fiction, reality and fantasy, history and myth, and I will look into this oscillation as an index of how literary meaning is being constituted in the novel; and I will look also into the ways historical facts have been manipulated, diverted from or simply adhered to.”
Mohamed Khalaph is a Sudanese literary and cultural critic. A graduate of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Khartoum (1976), he began publishing in the early 1980s with articles in Sudanese and international periodicals, including Sudanow Magazine.
This collection of essays on Tayeb Salih marks his first full-length book publication. Khalaph is a co-founder of the Sudanese Writers’ Union (1985) and later served as president of the Sudanese Writers and Journalists Association in London, where he also edited its magazine Alwah. He has participated in numerous conferences in Britain and abroad.
Since the early 1990s, Khalaph has also worked as a professional translator, holding a postgraduate diploma from the Institute of Linguists in London.
