Zaynab El Bernoussi, Associate Professor of Political Science and Interim Chair of the Department of Humanities at The Africa Institute, Global Studies University (GSU), recently visited the Australian National University’s Centre for Arab and Islamic Studies (CAIS) as a visiting fellow. During her fellowship, she launched the co-authored textbook, International Political Economy and the Global South: Perspectives from Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East (Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group, 2025). The book is written with Adriana María Garriga-López (Florida Atlantic University), Giuliano Martiniello (Sciences Po Rabat, Université Internationale de Rabat), and Bashir Saade (University of Stirling, UK).

As part of the launch, El Bernoussi participated in a book discussion with Jessie Moritz, Senior Lecturer at CAIS, in a hybrid session on August 14, 2025, attended by both in-person and virtual participants.

The book provides students from both the Global South and the Global North with a global perspective on international political economy (IPE), highlighting distinct concepts, categories, and issues from Southern and Northern viewpoints. It explores how the Global South responds to the demands of a global economy, the meaning of sovereignty for those with experiences of colonialism and imperialism, and ways to challenge Northern-dominated norms, institutions, and practices. Each chapter addresses gaps in dominant understandings and introduces alternative frameworks, covering core IPE concepts such as state, firm, capital, power, labor, globalization, and finance.

During this visit to CAIS, Director Karima Laachir invited Zaynab El Bernoussi to a performance by the Jazmourian Ensemble, and discussed future collaboration opportunities between CAIS and The Africa Institute, Global Studies University.
