Economists for Future (E4F), a global network of economists working to accelerate the transition to a just and equitable, post-carbon world, announces the appointment of Professor Grieve Chelwa to its Advisory Board on October 10, 2023.

Chelwa is an Associate Professor of Political Economy at The Africa Institute in Sharjah, UAE whose research on the economics of development, climate change, and public health will be a valuable asset to the E4F Advisory Board.

His research has been published in top academic journals and has received funding from major foundations, including the Carnegie Foundation, the Gates Foundation, and the Bloomberg Philanthropies. Professor Chelwa is also a prolific commentator on African economic matters, with his insights published in prominent media outlets such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, Bloomberg, CGTN, BBC, Mail and Guardian, People’s Dispatch, Lusaka Times, and Business Day.

“I am honored to join the E4F Advisory Board,” said Professor Chelwa. “E4F is at the forefront of the effort to make economics a more powerful force for good in the world. I am excited to work with my colleagues on the Board to promote a more sustainable and equitable future for all.”

E4F is excited to have Professor Chelwa and the other distinguished economists on its Advisory Board. “We, at E4F International, are so elated to announce our 12 member strong Advisory Board,” tweeted Economists for Future International (E4F). “As we take forward our plans for the 2023-26 horizon, we are so excited to have these incredible scholars joining us in our collective endeavors.”

Professor Chelwa is joined by fellow economists who are working to make the field more relevant to the challenges of the 21st century, including Steve Keen (University College London), Marina Fischer-Kowalski (University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna), Isabella Weber (University of Massachusetts Amherst; Harvard University), Deepak Malghan (Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore), Verónica Amarante (Universidad de la República (Udelar), Uruguay), A. Haroon Akram-Lodhi (Trent University, Canada), Ying Chen (The New School, New York), Michael Jacobs (University of Sheffield), Keston K. Perry (The University of California, Los Angeles); Franziska Hoffart (German Institute for Economic Research); and Ebru Voyvoda (Middle East Technical University).

E4F was founded in 2020 by a group of economists who were concerned about the lack of urgency in the economics profession in addressing the climate crisis. E4F has over 1,000 members from around the world, representing a wide range of universities, think tanks, and civil society organizations.

The Africa Institute extends its heartfelt congratulations to Professor Grieve Chelwa on his latest appointment and wishes him the very best in all his future endeavors.
