In commemoration of World Poetry Day, The Africa Institute is pleased to invite you to join us for an evening webinar of poetry on Monday, April 10, 2023, 8 pm GST.
World Poetry Day was declared by UNESCO in 1999, “with the aim of supporting linguistic diversity through poetic expression and increasing the opportunity for endangered languages to be heard.”
The webinar will host guests Neven Sawires, Lecturer of Hausa language, Faculty of African Postgraduate Studies, Cairo University; Abdushakur Yusuf, Lecturer of Literature, Department of Arabic Language, Kaduna State University, Nigeria; and Esther Karin Mngodo, Founder of UMB Ki Swahili Journal who will engage in a discussion with The Africa Institute Professors Surafel Wondimu Abebe, Assistant Professor of Performance Studies and Theory; Aliyu Mustapha Lawal, Lecturer of African languages and translation, and Mustafa Adam, Editor, and Translator to give insight and a broader understanding of poetry translation and its technicalities, the role of literary criticism in poetry interpretation, and the different dimensions of African literature.
The webinar will be moderated by Naminata Diabate, Associate Professor of Comparative Literature, Cornell University, and the Ali A. Mazrui Senior Fellow in Global African Studies, The Africa Institute.

Adam has worked as a lecturer in English Language at several Sudanese universities and in the United Arab Emirates, and he is also an editor and translator to and from English. He has many contributions in academic and literary translation from Arabic and English. Over the years, Adam has translated a wide range of poems and short stories by Sudanese writers and poets and others, including the epic poem: “The Return to Sinner” by Mohamed Abdel-Hay and the poetry of modernist poets in Sudan such as Mohammed al-Makki Ibrahim and Ali Abdelgayyoum and the Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish. In addition to co-translating “Al-Salahi: Prison Memoirs” with Adel Babiker, commissioned by the Sharjah Art Foundation, he translated several chapters in several books on art and literature. His translations from English into Arabic include poems by Edwin Muir, Dylan Thomas, W. B. Yeats, and Soyinka. His published translations have appeared in Arablit Quarterly and the South Atlantic Quarterly. Adam holds an MA in English Literature, on the theatre of Harold Pinter, University of Khartoum and an MA in Linguistics, University of Manchester. He currently works as an editor/translator at The Africa Institute, Sharjah.
Mngodo is a writer currently based in Dar es Salaam. She has worked as a journalist in Tanzania for more than 15 years. In 2017, she was the recipient of the Gordon N. Fisher/Journalists for Human Rights Fellowship for her career contribution to human rights reporting in Tanzania which in turn allowed her to participate in the William Southam Journalism Fellowship Program at Massey College at the University of Toronto. She recently graduated from Carleton University in Canada with a Master of Journalism degree.
Esther was the inaugural winner of the Ebrahim Hussein Poetry Prize for Swahili writing in 2014. Her short stories appear in various collections, including The Goddess of Mtwara, a Caine Prize Anthology; Imbiza Journal (South Africa) and has been featured on Badilisha Poetry Radio (South Africa). In 2021, she self-published her first poetry chapbook Jinsi ya Kurudi Nyumbani (How to return Home). Her writing explores the experience of being a woman.
As the founder of Umbu – an online literary journal that publishes women in Kiswahili, she seeks to ignite change in her society through storytelling. Esther is currently a member of a special committee tasked by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology to coordinate the inaugural Mwalimu Nyerere National Creative Writing Prize in Tanzania.
Lawal is appointed as a Lecturer in the African Languages and Translation program. He received his MA degree in Arabic literature and criticism from Al Azhar University in 2021. He served as Hausa lecturer at the faculty of African postgraduate studies in Cairo University from 2014-2021. He is an author of several publications in Arabic poetry, Hausa language and translation. Aliyu also worked as translator, news editor, and broadcaster at National Media Authority, Maspero, Egypt between 2020 – 2021. He is a poet and has participated in several competitions and festivals of Arabic poetry including “The Competition of Prince of Poet” in Abu Dhabi 2021, “Sharjah Poetic Festival” in Sharjah 2019, and “Luxor Poetic Festival” in Egypt 2016.
Sawires obtained her Ph.D. in Hausa Literature titled “Nazir Adam Salih, A technical study” in 2016; MA in linguistics titled “English Loan Words in Hausa Language” in 2007, both of them from the Faculty of African Postgraduate Studies, Cairo University, she did her BA, in English Literature from Ain Shams University, Cairo, Egypt. She attended courses such as Script Writing in Arabic and English, TV Presentation in 2009 at The American University in Cairo, High Diploma in African Studies in Arabic in 2003 at The Institute of African Research and Studies, Cairo, Teaching English as a second language at Hudson Community College NJ, USA. Some of her research are: Hausa Proverbs, Stylistic Study, Hausa Terminology, and Linguistic Study. The Romantic Elements in “Princess Fauziyya” by Tambaya L.S Guga, “Linzamin Shaidan” Translation into Arabic. She is currently a Lecturer of Hausa language at the Faculty of African Postgraduate Studies, Languages Department, Cairo University.
Abebe studied Literature (BA) and Cultural Studies (MA) at Addis Ababa University (AAU) (2010). He served as a lecturer, researcher, and Deputy Dean of Humanities at AAU. He continued working with AAU as an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Ethiopian Studies, Center for African Studies, and College of Performing and Visual Arts after he completed his Ph.D. in Performance Historiography at the University of Minnesota (2018). He is also a board member of a multi-genre online journal, AGITATE, at the University of Minnesota. He is currently the Assistant Professor of Performance Studies and Theory at The Africa Institute, Sharjah.
Yusuf holds Ph.D in Arabic Literature from Almonofiya University, Egypt and Masters degree in Arabic Literature from The High Institute for Islamic Studies Cairo, Egypt. He is currently working as a Senior Lecturer at Kaduna State University and Al Riyad University. Yusuf has published 23 journal articles and three books in Arabic literature. He won 18 awards inside and outside Nigeria including “The Good Ambassador” from Canal Suez University, Cairo University, University and Center of Alhadara College.

Diabate is an Associate Professor of Comparative Literature at Cornell University. She is a member of the core faculty in Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (FGSS), and affiliated faculty in the Department of Literatures in English; Romance Studies; Africana Studies and Research Center (ASRC); Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Studies (LGBT); Performing and Media Arts (PMA); and Visual Studies. Diabate holds a Ph.D in Comparative Literature with dual concentrations in African Diaspora Studies and Women’s and Gender Studies from the University at Texas at Austin (2011). A scholar of African and African diaspora studies and sexuality and gender studies with linguistic expertise in Malinké, French, English, Nouchi, Spanish, and Latin, her work seeks to redefine how we understand specific forms of embodied agency in the neoliberal present in global Africa. She is currently an Ali Marzui Senior Fellow at The Africa Institute.
