The Africa Institute (Global Studies University), Sharjah, UAE, is seeking applications for the position of Assistant or Associate Professor in African and/or African Diaspora history within the Department of Humanities. The successful candidate must be specialized in research related to one or more region within the African continent and preferably have expertise in teaching and/or research in African diaspora history. Preference is for a historian with an interest in African and African Diaspora intellectual history and political thought, and related movements such as Pan-Africanism, Negritude, and decolonization among others.

The appointed individual will be responsible for teaching two courses per semester in history, totaling four courses throughout the academic calendar. Additionally, he/she will provide guidance to graduate students and actively contribute to the vibrant interdisciplinary community within the Department and beyond. This is a full-time, 9-month position beginning in the Fall of 2024, at The Africa Institute located in Sharjah, UAE.

Applicants are required to have a Ph.D. in African historical studies at the time of appointment. The successful candidate will be expected to engage in an active program of scholarly research and publication, participate in committees, and supervise student research, master’s thesis, and doctoral dissertations. Faculty members at the institute contribute to the development of an innovative, interdisciplinary curriculum and provide students with diverse learning experiences through a combination of teaching, research, and service.

The application should also include a statement of teaching philosophy, showcasing successful teaching experience, and addressing strategies for serving a classroom with diverse backgrounds. Additionally, candidates should provide a statement outlining their research activities, a writing sample consisting of either a published journal article, a book chapter, or a dissertation chapter. The writing sample should be roughly equivalent in length to a standard academic journal article.
