The Global Young Academy (GYA) recently concluded its Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Kigali, Rwanda, from June 6-10, 2023. Bringing together young researchers and scholars from around the world, this event featured key participation of Binyam Sisay Mendisu, Associate Professor of African Languages and Linguistics and the Associate Director of The Africa Institute.

As a GYA alumnus, Professor Mendisu has actively promoted education and research in Africa, leveraging his extensive background in linguistics to foster interdisciplinary discussions.

During the AGM, he moderated a panel discussion on “The Role of Science Advice in Reforming Education Systems: Experiences from selected African Countries.” This panel aimed to emphasize the importance of scientific policy advice in addressing complex challenges and promoting evidence-informed decision-making in education reform.

The panel also highlighted the need to include young voices in science advice, as they are often underrepresented in policy-making processes. Professor Mendisu shared experiences from various African countries, shedding light on the barriers faced by young researchers and scholars and emphasizing the necessity of overcoming these barriers to establish inclusive and effective education systems.

Reflecting on his participation, Professor Mendisu expressed, “It was an honor to moderate the panel and discuss the role of science advice in education reform. Africa’s development heavily relies on evidence-informed policies, and young researchers have a crucial role to play in shaping these policies. The GYA annual general meeting provided an excellent platform for fruitful discussions and collaborations that can lead to meaningful change.”

Apart from his involvement in the GYA, Professor Mendisu is an inaugural fellow of the African Science Leadership Program (ASLP) at the University of Pretoria in South Africa. He serves on the Steering Committee of ASLP, actively supporting early career researchers in Africa. He was also recently elected as a fellow of the International Science Council (ISC).
